Forest Service 4FRI

4FRI 1st Analysis Area

4FRI 1st Analysis Area

The Landscape Strategy Working Group, a sub-group of the Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) Stakeholder Group, was tasked to work with an integrated U.S. Forest Service team to develop a comprehensive restoration strategy for the entire 4FRI area.

The 4FRI area extends over 2.4 million acres along northern Arizona's Mogollon Rim and includes the Kaibab National Forest, the Coconino National Forest, a portion of the Tonto National Forest, and the Apache / Sitgreaves National Forest.

In order to provide stakeholders' input for the development of a Proposed Action under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for the first restoration analysis area, the U.S. Forest Service funded the Landscape Restoration Strategy for The First Analysis Area  to be conducted by stakeholders and to be guided by Northern Arizona University ForestERA. The process involved the use of spatial data layers to develop candidate treatment areas within the Ponderosa pine forest type most likely available for mechanical thinning treatments.

The first analysis area extends over 724,000 acres of Ponderosa pine forest on the western side of the 4FRI area and  includes the Kaibab National Forests and the Coconino National Forest.

The 4FRI landscape restoration strategy is a planning effort designed to develop a comprehensive, Ponderosa pine forest restoration strategy for a 2.4 million acres assessment area.

To achieve desired outcomes, the 4FRI Stakeholder Group, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, is developing a 4FRI Landscape Restoration Strategy to contribute information, analysis outputs, and guidance for forest restoration implementation planning at the programmatic and project levels.

The document provides a proof-of-concept for using a systematic approach to stratify a large analysis area into strategic areas for treatment area identification, and description of existing and desired conditions.
