Arizona Wood Sources

Arizona woodlands are owned and managed under three different types of ownership:

  • 42% of the Arizona forest land is Federal property and is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service;

  • 41 % is private and is mostly woodland included in Indian Trust Land administered under the supervision of the Bureau of Indian Affairs;

  • 7% is administered by the U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management,

  • 6% is owned by the State of Arizona

  • 4% is in other public ownerships.

Overall, 59% of the forest land is administered by government agencies, and almost 68% of the net volume of growing stock on nonreserved timberland is occurring on lands administered by the National Forest System. Ponderosa pine comprises the greatest percentage of growing-stock volume on nonreserved timberland with 74% (Arizona’s Forest Resources, 1999, p. 15).
