Biomass

In the framework of Arizona Forest Restoration Products activities, there are two types of biomass.

Logging biomass

It is expected that the thinning of ponderosa pine forest according to a restorative prescription will yield approximately 8 to 10 tons of green biomass per acre. Assuming the treatment of 32,000 acres per year, thinning operations will produce annually a minimum of around 250,000 to 320,000 green tons of field biomass.

The annual operation of a biomass power plant requires approximately 12,000 tons of green (45% moisture content) ponderosa pine biomass per megawatt, therefore the logging biomass generated by the ecological restoration services of Arizona Forest Restoration Products will be able to sustain the production of 20 to 30 megawatt of electricity annually.

Biomass has a very low economical value, and its transportation over even short distances is not financially viable. In consequence, Arizona Forest Restoration Products intends to distribute the biomass generated by its thinning activities along the Northern Arizona forests arc between 3 power generation sites:

  • Power generation plant in the White Mountain area on the east side;

  • Projected power generation generation plant to be located in Navajo Camp on the west side;

  • New power generation plant to be located at the OSB plant site in Winslow.

Log yard and production line biomass

Debarking and stranding of the logs in the log yard of the OSB plant will produce a significant amount of additional biomass, and trimmings from the production line will also contribute a moderate amount of biomass.

This on site biomass will be used to operate the plant's own energy and thermal system, and surplus will be conveyed to the cogeneration plant to be located near the OSB plant.

New utilization of biomass (Ethanol, "Green" Diesel, etc.)

Many projects are currently under consideration in Northern Arizona for the creation of a Wood Campus in Camp Navajo, just west of  Flagstaff, where several new process plants would pioneer new utilizations of the biomass produced during thinning operations in the forests of Northern Arizona.

While these projects are still currently at a very early stage, Arizona Forest Restoration Products has already pledged its total support, and has committed to make the biomass generated during its thinning operations available to these local industries when they develop.
