The
manufacturing of oriented strand board (OSB) consumes remarkably little
water compared to other industrial uses of the forest biomass such as
ethanol or "green" diesel production. Actually, modern OSB manufacturing
technology reduces the amount of water consumed to approximately 12
gallons of non potable industrial water per ton of low value small
diameter logs transformed in high value added oriented strand board
(OSB).
Arizona Forest
Restoration Products anticipates to consume daily approximately 34,000
gallons of non potable industrial water. This water will
be reclaimed water procured from the Winslow Water Treatment Plant
(preferably), or non-potable water pumped on site from a 175 foot well
to the surface aquifer.
According to the American Water Works Association, the average
household uses 350 gallons of water a day (http://www.pathnet.org/sp.asp?id=1671),
so in term of impact on the overall Northern Arizona water resources,
the Arizona Forest
Restoration Products' plant will consume daily the equivalent of 97
households, or in other words only about 60% of the
55,000 gallons that the households of its 156 employees will consume.
This is remarkably low.
To put things in perspective, the 97 households equivalent represented
by the consumption of the Arizona Forest Restoration Products plant
represent only 6% of the consumption of the 1,624 households built
within the City of Flagstaff alone for the period of January to
September 2006 (344 single family units + 256 units of 5 or more
families)
