New Mexico Wood Sources

New Mexico woodlands are owned and managed under three different types of ownership:

  • 49% of the New Mexico forest land is Federal property and is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service;

  • 38 % is private, including Indian Trust Land administered under the supervision of the Bureau of Indian Affairs;

  • 7% is administered by the U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management,

  • 5% is owned by the State of New Mexico,

  • 1% is in other public ownerships.

Overall, 62% of the forest land is administered by government agencies, and almost 68% of the net volume of growing stock on nonreserved timberland is occurring on lands administered by the National Forest System. Ponderosa pine comprises the greatest percentage of growing-stock volume on nonreserved timberland with 42% (New Mexico’s Forest Resources, 2000, p. 16).
