What is Oriented Strand Board

Oriented strand board (OSB) is made from a process in which trees are cut into strands the size of bookmarks. The strands are then coated with an adhesive mixture and pressed together under intense heat to make large, uniform, exceptionally strong boards of varying sizes and thickness.

Evolving from waferboard in the late 1970s, oriented strand board (OSB) technology is unique in that long wood strands are oriented, not randomly placed. Oriented strand boards consist of layered mats. Exterior or surface layers are composed of strands aligned in the long panel direction, while inner-layers consist of cross aligned strands.

Strand have a uniform thickness and dimensions are predetermined, typically up to 6" long and 1" wide.

Oriented strand board (OSB) strength comes mainly from the uninterrupted wood fiber, interweaving of the long strands, and orientation of strands in the surface layers and core layers. Waterproof and boil proof resin binders are combined with the strands to provide internal strength, rigidity and moisture resistance.

Since its debut in 1978, OSB has been rapidly accepted. In many areas of North America, oriented strand board (OSB) has virtually replaced other panels in new residential construction. Today, all model building codes in the U.S. and Canada recognize oriented strand board (OSB) panels for the same uses as plywood on a thickness-by-thickness basis.
