Wood Sourcing

Wood sourcing is a critical activity for Arizona Forest Restoration Products because it is where the ecological and economical components of its vision meet.

Arizona Forest Restoration Products' aim is to procure the small diameter wood that is necessary for the production of oriented strand board (OSB) while following sound ecological restoration science through a regimen of thinning prescriptions aimed at restoring the forest to its pre-settlement density and its naturally balanced state.

Ponderosa Pine

Because there are specific chemical interactions between the wood fiber and the thermosetting adhesive compounds used in the manufacturing of OSB, only one species of wood can be used in a given manufacturing process.

The ponderosa pine forest is in extreme danger as illustrated by the Rodeo-Chediski fire - the largest burn in the Southwest - that cremated in June 2002 almost half a million acres, and as illustrated again with the Sedona and Flagstaff fires that endangered the two communities during the summer of 2006. It needs urgent restorative treatment.

Additionally, although the ponderosa pine is generally not valued in traditional wood industries because of its knotty appearance, its slow growth in the dry Arizona high altitude produces a high quality fiber well adapted to the production of OSB. Tests with logs coming from Arizona have been conducted by Arizona Forest Restoration Products on presses in Canada and Germany that are similar to the equipment that Arizona Forest Restoration Products intends to operate, and test results have confirmed that ponderosa pine OSB has higher density and greater stability that OSB manufactured using other species of wood, and exceeds all standards for mechanical, structural, delamination, uniformity and stability.

In consequence Arizona Forest Restoration Products will focus its ecological restoration activities, and its OSB production activities, on ponderosa pine.

Ecological footprint

In order to respect diversity of forest treatment and a mosaic distribution of forest treatment, Arizona Forest Restoration Products intends to source its wood procurement throughout the entire Northern Arizona and Western New Mexico area, and intends to offer ecological restoration services to no less than 9 U.S. National Forests.

In Arizona:

  • Coconino National Forest,

  • Kaibab National Forest (South),

  • Prescott National Forest (East),

  • Apache Sitgreaves National Forest,

  • Tonto National Forest.

In New Mexico:

  • Cibola National Forest (Mt Taylor),

  • Santa Fe National Forest,

  • Carson National Forest,

  • Gila National Forest

In addition, Arizona Forest Restoration Products intends to offer ecological restoration services to 2 tribal forests:

  • Chuska Navajo Forest,

  • White Mountain Apache Forest.
